Bedrock’s excavators dig with the cab empty

Construction Dive, 22 September 2026. The Operator retrofit is on live infrastructure work for Sundt and Zachry.

Construction Dive reported that Bedrock Robotics has put fully autonomous excavators on active U.S. sites. The Operator system retrofits an existing machine with sensors and compute so it digs without an operator in the cab.

The company said the kit is on a Nevada water-treatment job with Sundt Construction and a 1.2 million cubic yard civil sitework job with Zachry Construction. The piece describes this as the step after a year of testing under human supervision.

Boris Sofman, the CEO, told Construction Dive the sensor layout is a 360-degree view, and that a machine pauses and stops if the system detects a fault. It only runs autonomously in conditions that have been approved.
