A 15-tonne battery-electric hauler with no cab at all.
Volvo's autonomous hauler, the TA15, won a Red Dot design award in June 2020. The machine has no cab. It is a 15-tonne battery-electric hauler built for repetitive routes in quarries and mines.
How it works
The TA15 grew out of Volvo's HX02 concept. It navigates with GPS, lidar, radar and other sensors, and it runs in coordinated fleets with short opportunity charging along the route.
In the field
International Mining reported in November 2021 that Volvo Autonomous Solutions was working with Holcim to deploy the cabless haulers.
Why it matters
Take away the cab and the machine changes shape. The TA15 shows what a hauler looks like when it is designed for autonomy from the start.
